Manual for those who want to work in the best companies and do not depend on the fluctuations of the labor market
In the modern world there is no universal recipe how to build a career dream. The only thing that will help sooner or later come to it, — a systematic and meaningful approach based on a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Of course, it requires a lot of dedication and attention, but with this plan you can take career management into their own hands, not relying on chance.
One of the tools is career planning. This method is ideal for anyone who wants to build employer partnerships and does not depend on the fluctuations of the labour market. Drawing up a career plan involves four stages:
The preparatory (zero) stage
The main purpose of career planning is to define strategy. At this stage, you must collect a maximum of feedback from managers, subordinates, colleagues, and friends about your work and personal qualities. Ask them to tell the truth and give recommendations, all of this will be useful for you to make a list of your strengths and weaknesses, analyze them, and identify areas for further development. Try to interview people from different places and time periods, to make the picture as objective as possible.
It will also be helpful to talk with a mentor — a person whose opinion you particularly authoritative. When all necessary information is collected, arrange the “day of silence”, when he was alone with his thoughts and plans. Your task is to understand what you want from your career in the next three to five years, where do you see yourself in her peak, what competencies have at the moment, and which need to be followed. This strategy — your vector around which are built the elements of the whole plan.
The first stage of the career pyramid
Of course, each of us has a dream employer. But in building a career the principle of “all or nothing” is hardly effective. On the contrary, the more companies you approach, the more likely that one of them you will sooner or later appear. Clearly see on what should be focused on, will help build the pyramid. There may be a few, as long as each were collected by companies of the same type or from the same sector, whether FMCG, oil refining or IT.
The top of the pyramid — it’s the perfect company where you would like to be in the best scenarios. The middle part of the Russian and foreign organisations are likely to be higher, however, and competition more. Finally, the base of the pyramid is a small, but growing company that stand out in the market: a charismatic leader, innovation management system. The probability of being there is great, but the risks substantial.
Remember that the pyramid is not a hierarchy, and upon further analysis none of the categories should not dominate. Only then a career plan will be sustainable and will provide room for maneuver in any situation.
The second stage — gathering information from open sources
The range of companies identified, it’s time to fill the profile of each of them. Everything is important, from the location to the management model and corporate culture. Your task is to understand where you can most effectively apply their skills and develop in accordance with the strategy chosen during the preparatory phase. As the content of “files” some of the companies will be retiring and their places should take the new candidates. Ideally after collection and analysis of information will develop a list of seven or eight companies — they will need to focus on the next stage.
The third stage is collecting information from your contacts list
This, without exaggeration, the key phase will require a lot of commitment. Need to learn more about those companies, which in the end remained in the list: what is happening now and what challenges they face. To obtain accurate and complete information, please contact the company or to someone who is aware of all the nuances of the market. Here you will need skills networking: even if you have to write to a stranger via email or messenger, this should not stop you on the way to the goal. Unfortunately, in the minds of many Russian managers still exists prejudice against proactive communications: “How am I going to intrude!” And this is exactly what needs to be changed in the first place: in the new realities will be successful leaders-extroverts, freely managing its network of contacts.
It’s also the most time-consuming step: individual meetings, correspondence and phone calls may take more than one month. But this should not scare, because building a career is a project in which to invest the maximum to get the desired result.
The fourth stage — formation of proposals for the company
When you understand the problems facing companies now, you can offer your expertise for their solution. This approach will immediately distinguish you from candidates applying for open positions, and will begin the dialogue from the vantage point of the partner. After all, you come as an independent consultant and not the petitioner.
In order to convey their proposal to the leadership, use the mediation of headhunters or those people with whom you talked in the previous step, show that you are interested in solving the problems of the company.
