While most girls dream of being a model from the first time they watch a pageant on TV or pick up a fashion magazine, the truth is that modeling is an occupation and just like any other job, there are requirements one must meet. To be a model, you must have the right personality, motivation, genetics and business minded.

Plus size modeling also requires women to be a specific size and height. This is not meant to discriminate against those who don’t fit the criteria. There are other options to consider if you are interested in a modeling career.

Plus size models can work for print campaigns for designers and specialty designers and brands, online and even in catalogs. This can be followed by magazine editorials, showroom and fit magazines.

Requirements for Plus Size Modeling

Depending on the client, a size 12-18 can go for print modelling, size 10-20 for runway and a size 18 for fit modeling. The idea of plus size differs from one agency to the other. In some cases, the models are not truly plus size, they are tall, photogenic and of average size.

Height-5’9 and above for high fashion, 5’8 for regular, and 5’4 and under for petite
Photogenic-Whether you’re a little quirky or classically beautiful, for you to qualify to be a plus size model, you need to be photogenic. You have to be able to photograph the way you look in person.

Furthermore, you need to have good skin, nails and teeth. You shouldn’t have numerous piercings and tattoos. It’s important to note that some teens and women still venture into plus size modeling even though they do not fit the set criteria.

What if you don’t meet the requirement?

If you feel that you do not meet any of the criteria listed above, you can still consider getting into lifestyle modeling also known as commercial modeling. With this kind of modeling, you can promote products/services and capture the feel of a story. The only thing you need to do is to look the part. Additionally, you can work in TV commercials, trade show promotions, infomercials and print magazines and catalogs.

If you want to venture into a modeling career and you feel that you do not meet the criteria, do not give up. There are a lot of agencies looking for models to venture into lifestyle modeling. Beware of scams that ask you for money to sign up or get work.
